TEACHERS’ DIFFICULTIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH IN PEDAGOGICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE

Abstract


The analysis method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive design. The subject of this research is English teachers at SMPN 2 Lappariaja in the academic year 2022/2023. The instruments used in this research were observation checklist, fieldnote observation, interview guidelines and documentation guidelines. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques include condensation procedures, data display, and conclusion: drawing/verifying to analyze the data and using interactive models to verify the data. Research results show that teachers have difficulty developing curriculum and learning materials, utilizing information and communication technology, developing the potential of students, communicating with students and having difficulty in the process of assessing and evaluating learning outcomes. The factors influence are in the academic factors; the teachers’ ability, education system and school facility and the non-academic factors; are students and their social support. The strategies used by teachers to overcome the difficulties are giving students motivation, following the MGMP and discussing it with other teachers, taking an online seminar on the curriculum, utilizing materials to create solutions in class, providing vocabulary memorization techniques, having a private meeting or counseling with every student who has problems in English-language subjects and holding a pre-test to find out students’ ability in English subject.
