Abstract

The research aims to investigate the grammatical error types produced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Yapip Makassar in translating the narrative text and the possible sources of each error produced by the eleventh grade students of SMA Yapip Makassar. The method used in this research categorized as a qualitative method. The researcher took 8 students from the eleventh grade as the subject of this research. The research data obtained using a translation test. The result of the data obtained from the students’ translation test were analysed to find out the students’ grammatical error types using a classification theory suggested by Dulay, Burt, & Khrasen (1982). Then the theory proposed by Richard (1973) used to find out the students’ grammatical error sources. The result of the data analysis showed that the students produced four grammatical error types (Misformation, Omission, Misordering, and Addition error) in their narrative text translation. The result of the data analysis also showed that Intralingual error and Interlingual error are the main sources of grammatical error in the students’ narrative text translation.
