Students at universities face various demands that can make them experience stress. The stress experienced by students is called academic stress. Various previous studies have found that students experience stress which can originate from frustration, conflict, pressure, change and demands on themselves. Not all students can handle it. Some strategies for overcoming (coping) stress include focusing on solving problems or focusing on overcoming the emotions felt when experiencing academic stress. Previous studies report that strategies that focus on problems are better in dealing with academic stress and one of these strategies is coping effectiveness training. The aim of this research was to test the effectiveness of this training on 12 students who experienced moderate-high levels of stress. This research uses an experimental method with 3 stages, the first provides an explanation of stress, stressors and their impacts. Secondly, participants were introduced to ways of coping (problem and emotion focused coping). And finally, they were given an explanation of 8 problem focused coping strategies. Stress levels were measured before the material was given and 2 weeks after the training was completed. The results of the pre-post test measurements do show that students' stress levels have decreased, but it cannot be concluded that the changes occurred truly due to the provision of material because there was no control group as a comparison or the control in this study was not strong enough. This training suggests that students and universities can use several problem focused strategies to overcome the academic stress experienced by students in the following semester.
