Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors leading to the impostor phenomenon and its occurrence process in individuals. This research is qualitative research with a case study approach. Data were obtained through interviews and documentation on one person as the main respondent and two significant others as additional informants. The results showed that two factors were causing the emergence of the impostor phenomenon in persons, namely external strength factors consisting of teachers, friends, parents, and internal strength factors consisting of perceptions of ability and achievement motivation. Each of these two factors would affect the individual's personal characteristics in carrying out the achievement task so that when earning an achievement, the individual would perceive his/her achievement as luck, help from others, or due to efforts which did not reflect ability. The perception of achievement would then affect the individual's expression of the results received, and ultimately made the individual experience doubts about his/her abilities and achievements.
