Abstract

This study was a descriptive research by using qualitative approach that aimed to describe the errors made by students in quadratic function real life problems based on basic mathematical objects (facts, principles, concepts, and operation). The data collection were obtained by tests and interview. The subjects of this study were three students of mathematics education department in Universitas Negeri Makassar. Data analysis was used Miles and Huberman model: data collection, data reduction, data display, verification and conclusion. The results of this study said that the most mistakes made by subjects were conceptual errors and operation errors; students didn’t use appropriate formulas, misconceptions in choosed steps to solve problems, wrong in algebraic manipulation, and didn’t use hierarchical procedures. Then principle errors; misinterpretation or failed to grasp what the problem ask to and didn’t cognize the preconditions before using the formula. Students were unable to apply quadratic function specifically as part of the problem solving. This is due to the lack of mathematic skills how to carry out their conceptual knowledge to solve problems and lack of experience in solving similar problems.
