The Effect of Authentic Reading Materials on Students’ Word Meaning and Word Usage Mastery at Junior High School Context

Abstract


Mastering English vocabulary is essential to English foreign learners (EFL) in order to communicate accurately and fluently. This study explores the effect of using Authentic Reading Material in teaching reading comprehension on the students’ vocabulary mastery in terms of word meaning and word usage. This research applied pre-experimental design taking the ninth level of SMPN Tompobulu, Kab. Gowa which consisted of 22 students as the sample. The effect of using Authentic Reading Materials was measured by a vocabulary test. The test consisted of 20 items using the test format of matching word, fill the blank, making sentence, and multiple-choice. Statistical descriptive was employed for finding out students’ score and mean score, standard deviation and the value-test. The research findings show that students’ mean-scores on vocabulary mastery for word meaning increase from 84.54 in the pretest to 92.27 in the post test. While students’ mean-scores on vocabulary mastery for word usage increase from 63.63 in the pretest to 83.63 in posttest. The increased scores indicate that the use of Authentic Reading Materials in teaching reading comprehension affect students’ vocabulary mastery in terms of word meaning and word usage.
