Students’ and Teachers’ Perceptions of English Teachers Competencies at Senior High Schools in Makassar

Abstract


This article aimed at describing perception of students and English teachers at senior high schools in Makassar towards English teachers’ competencies in terms of pedagogic, personal, social, and professional competence. This research utilized quantitative descriptive design with random sampling technique. The subject of this research was students and English teachers. There were 370 students and 30 English teachers from inner city and suburban senior high schools in Makassar (SMAN 1 Makassar, SMAN 2 Makassar, SMAN 3 Makassar, SMAN 5 Makassar, SMAN 8 Makassar, SMAN 10 Makassar, SMAN 11 Makassar, SMAN 12 Makassar, SMAN 14 Makassar, SMAN 20 Makassar, SMAN 21 Makassar and SMAN 22 Makassar). The data was collected through questionnaire for students and for teachers. The result of data analysis showed students perceived their teachers as (1) competent in pedagogic and personal competence, and quite competent in social and professional competence. (2) Teachers perceived pedagogic, social and professional competence as important and personal competence as very important.
