Abstract

Abstract: The exploration of antimicrobial bioactive compounds continues to be advanced, especially for the treatment of tuberculosis. Given their lower level of toxicity so that can replace the usual drugs that have been resisted. Therefore, it is necessary to find anti-tuberculosis drugs with optimal safety and effectiveness. One of them is to use of plant biochemical compounds. The antimicrobial activity of some medicinal plant samples will be tested on M.tb sensitive and resistant strains. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antituberculosis activity of some medicinal plant samples to inhibit the growth of M.tb sensitive and resistant strains. The samples used in this sudy are medicinal plants that are suspected to have potential as antituberculosis property, such as noni (local name: mengkudu, Morinda citrifolia), Malayan Misletoe (local name: benalu jeruk, Dendrophthoe pentandra), pomegranate (local name: delima, Punica granatum), and Indian ash tree (local name: kayu jawa, Lannea coromandelica) obtained from South Sulawesi region. Chrushed leaves and wood from medicinal plant samples are extracted using ethanol maceration. The extracts then were tested on clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, i.e. sensitive strain H37Rv and resistant strain HE (resistant to isoniazid and ethambutol) using Microscopically Observed Drug Susceptibility (MODS) method. Of the four extracts tested, only noni (M. citrifolia) ethanol extract can inhibit the growth of M. tuberculosis H37Rv and HE strains at concentration 1500 ppm and optimum at concentration 2000 ppm. Thus, noni (M. citrifolia) ethanol extract has the potential as antituberculosis. Keywords: Mycobacterium tuberculosis, antituberculosis, medicinal plants, MODS
