Abstract

The absence of the father is the absence of the father's role in the child physically and psychologically. The absence of a father is caused by the death, neglect, and divorce of the parents. Divorce is the highest level of negative impact on children who experience father's absence. Girls are more likely to experience negative impacts than boys because fathers are the first male figures to meet and serve as protectors throughout life. The purpose of this research is to know the meaning and impact of father's absence for young women. The research respondents were young women aged 16 to 19 years who were abandoned by their fathers and lived only with their mothers. The research uses qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach. Data was collected by using snowball sampling technique with in-depth interviews. The results obtained are that the meaning of young women who experience father's absence due to divorce is interpreted as a traumatic and learning experience that has an impact on emotions, behavior, self-assessment, academics, sexual relations, and socialization.
