Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of depression in men can be challenging due to their reluctance to seek help. The objective of this research is to investigate the correlation between masculinity and the act of seeking assistance among males with mild depression residing in Makassar City. The present investigation employs a quantitative approach, utilising measuring instruments in the form of a help-seeking scale and a masculinity scale. The present investigation comprised a sample of 39 young adult males, aged 18-25 years, who exhibit mild depressive symptoms and are residents of Makassar City. The present study employed the Pearson's product moment correlation analysis technique for conducting hypothesis testing. Based on the analysis results, which indicate a significance value of 0.000 <0.05, it can be inferred that a noteworthy correlation exists between masculinity and help-seeking behaviour among men who suffer from mild depression. Based on the correlation coefficient value of -0.770, it can be inferred that a robust negative association exists between masculinity and help-seeking behaviour. This implies that men who exhibit higher levels of masculinity are less likely to seek help when experiencing mild depression. The propensity for men in a student role to seek assistance is greater than that of individuals in the employee or entrepreneur categories. The present study holds significance for the domains of clinical and social psychology by enhancing awareness of mental health and the construct of masculinity among males, thereby fostering a tendency towards seeking assistance for psychological or physical afflictions.
