Abstract

Social networking sites are very popular and become a global consumer phenomenon. At this time a lot of social networking sites that have sprung up and developed. Some of the most popular are Facebook and Instagram. These sites are popular because they have many users from all walks of life and even have accounts for more than one site from several social networking sites, so if this continues, it can cause various concerns in the form of internet addiction on social networks. This study aims to present the results of a literature review and empirical research related to (1) patterns of use of social networking sites, (2) motives of users of social networking sites, (3) exploring the potential for addiction to social networking sites. This study uses the method of literature review. A literature search was carried out using the Web of Knowledge database as well as Google Scholar. The results showed that the pattern of using social networking sites was generally seen from the frequency and duration of using social networks for more than 7 hours, which was dominated by women. The motives for using social networking sites are for social, interpersonal, informational purposes, and fulfillment of needs. In addition, the existence of individual subjective experiences because of accessing social networking sites which they think can overcome anxiety, boredom and dealing with the pressures of life affect the development of addictive behavior in using social networking sites. For future researchers who wish to examine this topic, it is hoped that they will be able to assess specific factors related to Internet social networking addiction, including pragmatic factors, attractiveness, communication, and expectations of social network users so that they can predict the etiology of Internet social networking addiction.
