Abstract

Overprotective behavior of parents is the behavior of excessive protection with the intention of protecting children from the dangers of the outside world. Overprotective behavior of parents can trigger behavioral and emotional impacts on children’s development as adolescents. Adolescents feel uncomfortable and feel depressed, which triggers negative emotional reactions. Emotional regulation strategies can be a way for adolescents to learn to manage negative emotions and regain emotional stability. The purpose of this research is to determine how adolescents who have overprotective parents manage their emotions using emotional regulation strategies. This research is qualitative research using a phenomenological approach. There are three respondents in this research and obtained through the purposive sampling technique. The results of this research indicate that the overprotective behavior of parents has an impact on behavior change and negative emotional reactions. Emotional reactions of anger, sadness and even fear are felt by adolescents. Emotional regulation strategies can be a way for adolescents to deal with negative emotions that arise. Regulatory strategies in the form of telling stories with the closest people, directing thoughts towards a more positive direction, doing activities in the room, pondering, and daydreaming are strategies used in overcoming emotional reactions that arise. Lack of ability to manage emotions and use inappropriate emotional regulation strategies can lead to thoughts of wanting to die and maladaptive behavior. The right emotional regulation strategy used can help to provide emotional stability for adolescents.
