Abstract

Short-term memory takes an important part in the learning process. Humor as positive emotion stimulates an increase in short-term memory skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of humor on short-term. Research subjects (N = 7) are students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department of the State University of Makassar. This study uses a one-group pretest-posttest design. Pretest is given right before the intervention and posttest was given 20 minutes after the intervention. The instrument involved of this study are list of Latin words, funny show, PANAS-X scale, and informed consent. The reliability of the scale was measured by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient with a 0,97 of positive affect value and a 0.91 of negative effect value. The data analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test in SPSS 22.0 for windows. The results of the pretest and posttest research suggested a very significance value, p = 0.0085 (p <0.01), means there is an effect of humor on short-term memory. Thus, it is considered humor can be an alternative to improve short-term memory skills.
