Abstract


Student have a narcissistic personality in using Instagram which tends to promote themselves and their beauty through posts, this is related to self-esteem. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and narcissistic tendencies among students using Instagram in the city of Makassar. This research uses quantitative methods. The sampling technique used in this study was Accidental Sampling, with a total of 403 respondents (n = 403). The scale used in this study is the State Self Esteem Scale and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory scale in the form of a Likert scale. The State Self Esteem Scale is an adaptation scale of Todd F. Heatherton and Janet, namely performance, social, and appearance. Meanwhile, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory scale used is an adaptation scale of Raskin and Terry, namely authority, self-sufficiency, superiority, exhibitionism, exploitativeness, vanity, and entitlement. The research data were analyzed using the Spearman rho test with the help of SPSS 22.0 for windows. The results showed that there was no relationship between self-esteem and narcissistic tendencies among students using Instagram in the city of Makassar (p = 0.348, r = 0.047). The results of this study are expected to reduce narcissistic tendencies in students by looking for other activities so that they are not influenced by social media such as Instagram.
