Abstract


Communication skills are one of the obstacles experienced by children with autism. One method that can be used to improve the communication skills of children with autism is Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) method. This research purpose to determine effectiveness of PECS method to improve communication skills in children with autism. Participants in this research were two children with autism who experienced obstacles in communicating. This research used an experimental design with approach single subject research (SSR). Approach were collected by observation based on behavioral indicators from the communication stages of children with autism by Sussman. PECS intervention process was carried out in 10 sessions for participant A and 17 sessions for participant B. Data were analyzed using descriptive and visual inspection. Result of this research showed that participant A and participant B inmproved communication skills from stage I, namely happy with their own world to stage II, namely resquester. participant A even gave rise to behavior contained in stage III, namely early communication. Implication of this research is PECS intervention can be used as an alternative method to improve communication skills in children with autism.
