Abstract


The purpose of this study is to describe every event that happened before the moment of murder, identify the emotional regulation of the offender prior to the murder, and also describe the emotion regulation after committing a murder. This study uses the emotion regulation aspect theory belong to Thompson which consists of emotion monitoring, emotion evaluation, and emotion modification to explain the emotion regulation that has been experienced by the participants. This study uses qualitative research method with intrinsic case study type. This study used in-depth interviews in data collection on each participant. This study involves three murder participants who are currently serving their sentences in Prison and Detention centre of Makassar. The three participants sentenced to criminal penalties in accordance with article 338 of the KUHP. The result of this study shows that the failure of emotional regulation that occurred in the three participants was caused by angry emotions that could not be controlled. The failure of emotion regulation that occurred in the three participants by parenting, experience, and influence of alcohol. The killings committed by the three
participants began with an argument which eventually resulted in the victim’s death. Based on these finding, it is hope that this research will benefit the community as a reference in understanding the emotion regulation of murders and become a scientific reference in making programs for murders who are in prison that they have better emotion regulation.
