Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to uncover the meaning of denominations, connotations and myths in the traditional chanting of Mangade Rituals' bugis community Mallawa Maros reviewed from the semiotics study of Rolland Barthes. The method in this study is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study is a description of the community that is used as the basis for the study and analysis. The source of the data in this study is oral data obtained from informants. The data collection techniques used in this study are unstructured interview techniques and observation techniques. The data analysis techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation, collection, and verification. The results of the research on traditional Mangade rituals, which they call dendang-dendang show the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. First, the denotative meaning expresses the meaning neutrally without interfering with the sense values contained in the object of research, while the connotative meaning reveals the untrue meaning and emotions or emotional values contained in the object of research. Myth is a type of speech but is not determined by the object of the message but the way the myth conveys the message itself. This tradisional song tells about the Makassar Bugis people who are famous for their hard working character and unyielding spirit in achieving everything.

Keywords: Traditional Singing, deed, denomination, connotation, myth, semiotics Rolland Barhes.
