Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the effect of interfering ions on the adsorption of methylene blue using molecularly imprinted polymers. The interfering ions used were Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions with concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 mg/L, respectively. 0.05 g of molecularly imprinted polymer adsorbent was contacted in 25 mL of a mixture of 100 ppm methylene blue solution at pH 10 for 60 minutes and Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions with concentration variations of 0 – 50 mg/L. The mixture was centrifuged and then the filtrate was collected. The remaining concentration of methylene blue was determined using a visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). Methylene blue adsorption capacity with Cd2+ interfering ion concentrations of 0 – 50 mg/L was 42.62 – 38.90 mg/g and Pb2+ interfering ion concentrations of 0 – 50 mg/L was 42.72 – 37.79 mg/g. The greater concentration of interfering ions Cd2+ and Pb2+ in the mixed solution, the lower adsorption capacity but not significantly. The results showed that the greater concentration of interfering ions, the adsorption capacity of methylene blue using molecularly imprinted polymers tended to be constant.
