The Relationship Between Loneliness and Social Media Addiction in Early Adulthood

Abstract


Social media addiction is the excessive and uncontrollable use of social media. Normal use to social media addiction is a mechanism for reducing stress, loneliness, and depression. This study aims to determine the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction in early adulthood. This study uses quantitative methods. Respondents in this study were 439 early adults. Sampling technique used was accidental sampling. The social media addiction measuring tool is the Social Networking Addiction Scale developed by Shahnawaz and Rehman, while the loneliness measurement tool is the Loneliness Scale developed by Gierveld. The results of hypothesis testing in this study using the Spearman Rho with the results of r =0.158 with p =0.001. These results show that there is a significant positive relationship between loneliness and social media addiction in early adulthood.
