The naturalness of Indonesia-English and English-Indonesia Translation(S) by English Department Students at the University

Abstract


Students’ Naturalness is one of the aspects to measure the quality of translation that includes the closest natural equivalence of a source language message in terms of meaning and terms of style. This study aimed to know how students’ naturalness of Indonesian-English and English-Indoneisan Translations, and it can be seen in categories regarding the meaning, word choices, and grammar. The categories are unnatural, less natural, natural, and highly natural sentences. This research was conducted at the State University of Makassar. The descriptive qualitative method was applied to gain the data and the sources of data were 13 respondents. The instruments used in this research translated an informative Indonesian text into English and English text into Indonesian. The results of this study indicate that the results of students' translations from Indonesian to English are classified as highly natural, even so students still have to improve their vocabulary and improve their grammar skills because there are still many students who translate sentences but the choice of words is not correct, as well as the grammar they make.
