Disruptive Behavior and Factors Causing It in English Classes at Vocational High Schools

Abstract


The objectives of this research are to describe; (1) The students’ disruptive behavior that occur in EFL class, (2) to find out factors that contribute to the students’ disruptive behavior. This research applied qualitative research design. The participants of the research were the EFL students in the tenth grade from the Nurse Department at SMK Laniang Makassar that consist of 40 students. The researcher used purposive sampling to collect data from the population. The data was collected by using classroom observation and semi-structured interview. The result of this research showed (1) Out of thirteen behavior that were observed during the EFL teaching and learning process, there are eight types of disruptive behavior that frequently seen among students namely inattention, apathy, cheating, excessive use of phone, needless talk, moving about the room,disrupting by making loud noises and annoying others. (2) The factors that contribute to students’ disruptive behavior in class are lack of interest toward EFL subject, individual problem, physical discomfort, loud noises and also peer pressure.
