Pattaungeng Mattoriolo Rigoarie Traditional Ceremony As an Expression of Gratitude to the Ancestors and the Creator

Abstract

The background of this research is the existence of a traditional ceremony for the people of Goarie Village, Soppeng, South Sulawesi which has been carried out until now and has become an annual ceremony. This customary ceremony is known as Pattaungeng Mattorilo Rigoarie or Mallangi Balubu, which is an annual event which is carried out based on expressions of gratitude by the local community for their predecessors so as to create a close relationship with the ancestors and the Supreme Creator. This study intends to explain the existence of the Pattaungeng Mattorilo Rigoarie or Mallangi Balubu traditional ceremony and how the series of events are carried out at this Pattaungeng traditional ceremony. In addition, the method applied to this research is quantitative research by applying a cultural anthropological approach. The results of the study show that the traditional ceremony of Pattaungeng Mattorilo Rigoarie or Mallangi Balubu is still being carried out today and is commemorated every year by displaying a series of events contained therein. This ceremony is carried out as a tribute to the ancestral spirits that have been passed down from generation to generation.
