Factors Causing Language Anxiety of EFL Learners in Intensive English Guidance Program at Universitas Muslim Indonesia

Abstract


This study is aimed at describing the factors that cause language anxiety in the English group discussion performance as one of the causal factors in order to get the wider understanding about this phenomenon. This research used descriptive qualitative method. It involved English Literature and English Education Department students of Universitas Muslim Indonesia in The Intensive English Guidance Program in academic year of 2021-2022 as the participants. The instruments were the researcher himself as the interviewer, interview guideline, questionnaire, observation sheets, reflection sheets, and notes. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The data were in the form of field notes and interview transcript. The trustworthiness was gained through the observation technique which involved the English instructors. The researcher also made data categorization before formulating the findings. The findings of this study describe 5 aspects in the research questions which include the type of language anxiety, the level of language anxiety, the factors that cause language anxiety, the impact on language anxiety, and the way students deal with their language anxiety. The first finding is that language anxiety types are divided into 2 types, namely Facilitative Anxiety and Debilitative Anxiety. The second finding is that anxiety levels are divided into 3, namely Low Level/Mild Anxiety, Middle Level/Moderate Anxiety, and High Level/Severe Anxiety.
