The Effect of Mental toughness on Peak performance in Soccer Athletes at Makassar

Abstract


Peak performance is the optimal ability of athletes. Meanwhile, mental toughness is a psychological component of athletes to face challenges. This study aims to determine the effect of mental toughness on  peak performance in soccer athletes. The sample is 200 soccer athletes from a total of 412 populations in Makassar. The data collection technique was used the instrument of (1) mental toughness and (2) the scale of peak performance. This research analyzed using simple linear regression analysis techniques. The results showed that 1) there was a positive influence of the mental toughness to peak performance soccer athlete in Makassar city, 2) based on the hypothesis test result, the R-square value was 0.335 (33.5%) with a p value of 0.000 which means that the mental toughness contributes to peak performance of (33.5%). There are 66.5% is effect by other factor which is anxiety, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, and attribution. Based on the result of the study showed that there is a positive effect of mental toughness to peak performance soccer athlete in Makassar. The implications are useful as a basis for club managers in developing program to improve the peak performance of soccer athletes.
