Professional Teachers’ Competence on Students’ Critical Thinking Skills Through Reading Comprehension Learning

Abstract


This research aims to determine the professional teachers’ competence on students’ critical thinking skills through reading comprehension learning, and the students’ responses to the professional teachers’ competence. This research is qualitative research with two teachers as subjects and the students from two classes taught by the teacher. The instruments used were observation checklist sheets, and observation sheet. The observation checklist sheet to find out the teacher teaching strategy in encouraging critical thinking skills, then the observation sheet to find out the professional teachers’ competence on students’ critical thinking skills through reading comprehension learning, and the students’ responses to the professional teachers’ competence. Then, the data obtained is analyzed through four stages, namely data collection, data condensation, data display, and data verifying and conclusions. Based on the result data analysis, it was found that in the teacher 1 and teacher 2 were implementing the indicator of critical thinking skills through their teaching strategy in teaching reading comprehension. Then, this research find out the students’ responses consist of three kinds of response, those are cognitive, affective, and conative response.
