The Use of (SWELL) Social-Interactive Writing for English Language Learners Method to Develop Students’ Analytical Exposition Writing Ability

Abstract


This research aimed to find out the development of the students’ ability to write analytical exposition text viewed from both generic structure and language use at XI IPA of MA Muhammadiyah Salaka. The type of this research was quantitative method. This research used pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The researcher collected data by giving writing test and observation sheet. The sample of the research was class XI IPA of MA Muhammadiyah Salaka, which consist 35 students taken by using simple random sampling Technique. The result of the research showed that the eleventh-grade students of MA Muhammadiyah Salaka had fair score in pretest. After treatment, their ability to write analytical exposition significant improved. The data were analyzed using t-test showed that the value t-test of generic structure was higher than the value of t-table (4.8>1.697), the value t-test of language use was higher than the value of t-table (1.95>1.697). It proved that null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It was concluded that social-interactive writing for English language learners’ method improve the students’ ability to write analytical exposition text covering generic structure and language use. It is stated that the use of swell method gives a significant effect to write analytical exposition text. Hence, the researcher suggested that the English teacher might consider using swell method as an alternative technique in teaching writing.
