Abstract

This research aimed to find out the use of Indonesian in teaching English as a foreign language. The objectives of this research were to find out 1) in what situations the lecturer use Indonesian in teaching English 2) to find out the reason of lecturer should use Indonesian in teaching English and 3) to find out the student’s perceptions to the use of Indonesian in teaching English as a foreign language. The researcher used a concurrent triangulation mixed methods design and administered a semi-structured interview to gain the qualitative data and a close-ended questionnaire to collect the quantitative data. In this research, the researcher used purposive sampling to collect data. The participants were 3 lecturers and 15 students of the English education Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The results of data analysis show that lecturers tend to use English more dominantly in EFL classrooms but in certain situations, they must use Indonesian with reasons to clarify and emphasize the meaning of the material and make it easier for students to understand the material being taught. The situations that require lecturers to use Indonesian in teaching English were depending on the level of difficulty of the course; when there is a misunderstanding between lecturers and students; when students seem to lack understanding of explanations in English, and when lecturers have low self-efficacy in speaking. The results also show that most students prefer lecturers to use English in learning English because it can help them in mastering vocabulary. However, the students also support the use of Indonesian in learning English because it can improve and make it easier for them to understand the material being taught, increase their activeness in class and improve their English skills.
