Abstract

This study aims to determine the language style of English teachers in teaching English and students' responses to the language style of English teachers in teaching English. This study uses mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative methods). The population of this study were English teachers and students of MAN Palopo. From MAN Palopo's English teachers, the researcher chose one English teacher. And for supporting data, researchers used a random sampling technique. Researchers took 20 students in grade two. The research instrument used interviews and questionnaires. The results of the data analysis explain that there are two main findings in this study. First, the researcher found five types of language styles used by English teachers. They are frozen, formal, consultative, casual and familiar. The teacher uses these types of language styles according to the conditions of the students in the class. Second, the results of the questionnaire showed that the students' responses to the English teacher's language style were very positive. This is evidenced by the score of the student questionnaire, where the highest score was 90 which was categorized as very positive and the lowest score was 84 which was categorized as positive and most of the students showed positive statements about the English teacher's language style. Further analysis shows that the average score is 87 which is categorized as very positive.
