Abstract


The objectives of this study are to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of local culture-based material in improving reading ability of eighth grade students of junior high school. The research was conducted on State Junior High School 9 Yogyakarta.This is an experimental research. The steps were pre-test, treatment and post-test. The data were collected by using multiple choice tests in form of pre-test and post-test. Then, data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The result of the research showed that Local Culture-Based Material (LCBM) has significant effect to improve students’ reading ability. Thus, the local culture-based material (LCMB) is recommended to apply in an English material related to Indonesia’s local culture in teaching reading. Furthermore, it is expected for further study about local-culture based material in improving students’ English ability
