Abstract


Research objectives, namely: Exploring the theme of the Tempo newspaper short stories; Explore the types of environmental education in the short stories of the Tempo newspaper; Determine the relevance of teaching the Tempo newspaper short stories in junior high school. The source of data from Tempo newspaper short stories. This research is a qualitative  with a descriptive method. Data analysis, namely: data comparison, i.e. activities carried out by comparing verbally, both in the form of words, phrases, or sentences; categorization; data presentation; and inference. The ecocritical analysis uses the Garrard (2004) approach. The short stories themes are womens, religions, deaths, environments, accidents, struggles, robots, photographers, families, paintings, warfares, and visually impaired. There are three short stories with environmental themes, which generally concern animals, namely: Caller of Death by Jemmy Piran; Samsara Samsa by Kiki Sulistyo, and "Reyna Kumala" by Win Han. Snowman Short Story by Faris Al Faisal about natural disasters. Environmental phenomena in short stories are pollutions, natural disasters, and animals. These four short stories can be used as material for the enrichment of teaching materials in the junior high school of Indonesian Language class IX semester I; the subject matter of the Short Stories Builder element; Basic Competencies (KD) 3.5 and 4.5.
