Abstract

Indonesia's demography which shows the large number of population aged 10-24 years in 2010 is projected to increase gradually until Indonesia receives a demographic bonus in 2030-2040. The demographic bonus is the population of productive age which is higher than the number of population at unproductive age. Therefore, Indonesian youth today need to be prepared with adequate knowledge in order to produce a generation that is physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy. This is due to the importance of health, especially reproductive health, as the first and foremost factor to be produce a strong and resilient generation of Indonesians in the future. Although the importance of reproductive health has been promoted by various institutions at the national and international levels, there are still many adolescents with relatively low reproductive health knowledge. One contributing factor is the limited access to information on reproductive health for adolescents, especially among Indonesian people who view reproductive health and sexuality as a taboo topic to be discussed. Based on the importance of understanding reproductive health for adolescents, this study was conducted to measure the level of understanding of reproductive health among adolescents who are attending junior high school in Makassar. This research is a qualitative descriptive study involving 134 adolescents aged 12-15 years. The test instrument used to measure reproductive health knowledge in adolescents has been validated by two expert validators. The results of data analysis showed that the majority of junior high school students in Makassar had reproductive health knowledge in low category (51%) and in moderate category (40%). There was only a small proportion of adolescents who had reproductive health knowledge in good category (9%). This implies the importance of efforts to improve the understanding of reproductive health for adolescents in Indonesia, especially in Makassar City.
