Abstract

Abstract: Lucilia sericata is one type of insect that naturally acts as a detrivor. This natural role is one of the considerations to make L. sericata as an organic waste bioconversion agent. However, to find out its potential it is necessary to study its life cycle. Therefore this study aims to determine the life cycle of L. sericata in laboratory. Flies obtained from the field are reared in a cage in a chicken liver as maintenance medium. Furthermore, observations were made to determine the duration of time required by L. sericata to go through each stage, starting from eggs, larva, pupa and imago. The results showed that L. sericata eggs hatched 9 hours after being layed. The life length of 1st instar larva is 1-4 days, while instars II and III are 1-2 days and 2-4 days respectively. On average the pupa period is passed for 7 days, while the imago stage is 2-4 weeks.

Keywords: Lucilia sericata, life cycle, eggs, larva, pupa and imago.
