Abstract


Abstract. This study aims to describe the code system in the Maccera Arajang ritual of the Gilireng Bugis Community in Wajo Regency using the code system according to Roland Barthes. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The results showed that the code system in the Maccera Arajang ritual found five codes, namely the hermeneutic code in the form of reading incantations, giving offerings and sounds, proethetic code in the form of preservation of traditions which was carried out as a rejection of reinforcements, maintaining harmony in the relationship between humans and God, genomic code as cultural expression in Maccera Arajang, semic code in the form of preparation for a ritual procession by bringing offerings, symbolic code consisting of religious symbols that use mantras while natural symbols in buffalo slaughter and object symbols on heirlooms, musical instruments, offerings and walasoji.
