Habermas’s Vision for Social Cohesion in a Globalised and Cosmopolitan World

Abstract

The history of the international community is marked by numerous challenges, including conflicts among countries and issues within non-governmental organizations. A significant underlying issue is the lack of effective communication between international actors, which hinders mutual understanding and affects social cohesion. This study explores the questions:  how can multiculturalism be addressed and social cohesion enhanced within the international community? How far is effective communication able to promote peace among international community? Do ethical norms have a role to play towards avoiding conflicts? By analysing these issues through the lens of Jürgen Habermas’s philosophical theories, the research finds that Habermas's concepts of communicative action and deliberative democracy offer valuable frameworks for improving international dialogue and integrating diverse cultural identities. Recommendations include implementing international policies that promote inclusive dialogue, strengthening global media platforms to support public deliberation, and developing frameworks that encourage ethical norms applicable across diverse cultural contexts. The work concludes by emphasizing the need for ongoing international cooperation and strategic communication to address global challenges effectively.
