Correlation Studies on Personality, Learning Styles, and Learning Outcomes in University Students

Abstract


The objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the students’ personalities; and (2) to identify the students’ learning styles. (3) To find out if there is a correlation between students’ personalities and English learning achievement. (4) To find out if there is a correlation between students’ learning styles and English learning achievement. (5) To find out if there is a correlation between students’ personality, learning style, and English learning achievement in the fourth semester English department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The method of this study was correlational research. The subject of this study was the fourth-semester English department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar in the 2020 academic year. The sample for this study was made up of 30 out of 93 students, and they were picked at random. The instruments used were the questionnaire and the test. The results of the research show: (1) there are more extrovert students than introvert students. (2) The dominant learning style is the aural learning style. (3) There is no statistically significant correlation between personality and English learning achievement. (4) There is a statistically significant positive correlation between learning style and English learning achievement. It lies around 0.40-0.599, which is considered to have a medium correlation. (5) There was a statistically significant correlation among students’ personality, learning style, and English learning achievement. They all had a positive correlation of 0.466, which was a medium correlation.
