Abstract

Students of the English Education Study Program in
Universitas Negeri Makassar are required to have knowledge
and the ability to carry out research as well as to write
scientific papers. However, even though students are generally
equipped with such knowledge and skills, and are required to
carry out research as one of the requirements for graduation,
there are still many of them who are lacking or do not
understand one of the important elements in conduct a research
and writing scientific papers. This commonly referred to as
research gap. The research gap is the lack of scientific
information in various aspects based on literature review that
is relevant to the chosen research topic, thus there is strong
reason to conduct a research or to write scientific papers on
particular topic. Based on these insights, experiences, and
observations, we conducted a training for English Education
students of UNM to improve their knowledge and skills in
formulating a research gap for research or scientific papers.
This training managed to broaden students' knowledge about
research gaps and form their initial skills in formulating their
research gaps for their own study and scientific papers writing.
